Approach

Efficiency is the environmental program.

Efficiency is not a separate initiative for us. It is the same discipline we apply everywhere else.

If something enters our system, we would like to know exactly where it goes and what it becomes. That question produces environmental improvement as a by-product, which is why our environmental reporting is organized around intensity measures rather than around programs.

We publish our commitments annually in the Sustainability Report and report progress against internal indices. The indices are ours, they are not comparable to third-party measures, and we say so plainly wherever they appear.

Six areas of focus

Water

Using less of it, and using it twice.

Wet milling is a water-intensive process, and reducing withdrawal per unit of finished product has been our principal environmental commitment for a decade. Closed-loop condensate recovery is now standard at every facility, and process water is reused across multiple stages before treatment and discharge.

We report withdrawal intensity annually against an internal index. Improving efficiency throughout our value chain remains the primary lever, and we continue to identify opportunities in areas previously considered fully optimized.

Agriculture

Healthier soil, better scheduling.

Our agronomy program provides no-cost soil and tissue analysis to partner growers and supports nutrient timing, cover cropping and residue management practices that maintain soil health across the counties that supply our facilities.

Coordinated planting and harvest scheduling reduces field losses and delivery-point moisture variance. Creating measurable progress through responsible partnerships is the operating principle of the program: growers keep their independence and gain the benefit of the system view.

Energy

Generating on site.

Co-generation now supplies a substantial share of thermal and electrical demand at two facilities, with evaluation underway at a third. Steam recovery, heat exchange optimization and drive efficiency programs continue across the network.

Transportation energy is addressed through routing: our distribution circuits are planned to reduce empty running, and rail is used wherever terminal capacity permits.

Communities

Where our people live.

The Community Nutrition Partnership Program provides ingredient contributions, formulation assistance and employee volunteer time to school nutrition programs, regional food banks and municipal meal services in the counties where we operate.

We would like everyone in these communities to have reliable access to food. Participating organizations report distribution volume and served population counts, which supports both our community investment reporting and our regional capacity planning.

Waste Reduction

Very little leaves as waste.

Wet milling separates a kernel into starch, protein, fiber and oil, and each fraction has a market. That completeness is inherent to the process rather than an environmental initiative, but it means our facilities generate remarkably little that has no use.

Remaining streams are directed to feed, industrial and energy recovery applications. Landfill diversion exceeds ninety-five percent across the network.

Responsible Growth

Growing without growing wasteful.

Expansion of processing capacity, distribution reach and served volume is evaluated against efficiency criteria as well as commercial ones. A facility that increases output while increasing intensity is not, by our definition, an improvement.

Our long-horizon planning work considers how demand on the American food system is likely to develop over the coming decades, and what capacity will be required to meet it responsibly.
